Castel Caramel is a private, non-profit artist residency and cultural platform in the former atelier of the Austrian painter Ernst Fuchs, in the hills above the Côte d’Azur.

Each year since 2018, Castel Caramel has invited one or two artists to live and work at the house while they prepare a gallery or institutional exhibition. The residency provides accommodation, studio space and logistical support, and residents are encouraged to invite collaborators for shorter stays.

Kylie Manning’s paintings sit between abstraction and figuration. Figures surface from thin layers of oil and ground pigment and are washed back into them, in compositions shaped by the coasts of her childhood, from Alaska to Mexico.

Manning studied philosophy and visual arts at Mount Holyoke College and received an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, during which she studied and exhibited in Leipzig alongside painters of the New Leipzig School. She joined Pace Gallery in 2022. In 2023 she designed the backdrops and costumes for a collaboration with the choreographer Christopher Wheeldon at New York City Ballet.

Casey Bolding is a self-taught painter. His technique draws on years with a faux-finishing company, layering industrial paint and plaster in the houses of suburban Colorado, and on writing graffiti and painting murals on derelict walls.

Working in oil, acrylic and plaster on repurposed wood, he builds surfaces up and scrapes them back in a slow, almost archaeological process. His compositions move between interiors and exteriors, resist explicit narrative and often obscure their figures.

At Castel Caramel

Bolding developed a body of work drawn from the history and atmosphere of the region, in preparation for Pasaia, his solo exhibition at Villa Magdalena, Madrid, in 2025. He also painted a large-scale mural elsewhere in the region, continuing his interest in found architecture and cyclical decay.

Selected exhibitions

  • 2026 Bloodstream, Karma, Los Angeles
  • 2025 Pasaia, Villa Magdalena, Madrid
  • 2025 Pocketknife, Polina Berlin Gallery, New York

Henry Curchod spent most of his adult life in Australia, where he came to know coastal life and the fishing industry as well as the world of advertising. His Kurdish heritage led to an early interest in Persian miniature painting, which informs his figurative work.

He graduated from the University of New South Wales in 2014.

Minami Kobayashi

Minami Kobayashi paints in egg tempera and oil. Her figurative paintings of people, animals and places combine intimacy with a quiet strangeness, setting ordinary scenes slightly off-kilter.

She studied painting at Tokyo University of the Arts and received an MFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018.

At Castel Caramel

During her residency Kobayashi made paintings drawn from the coast and villages around the house, among them Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and A Sphinx statue and a white trainer (Castillon).

Stefanie Heinze at Castel Caramel, 2022

In Stefanie Heinze’s paintings, abstract and ambiguous forms resolve into unexpected subjects, from body parts and everyday objects to animal-like figures, set against vivid, fantastical grounds. Her work moves between high and low culture, and her titles are as lyrical as her compositions. The paintings grow out of small, intimate drawings.

Heinze studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts, Oslo, and the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in 2016.

At Castel Caramel

Heinze spent the summer of 2022 at Castel Caramel preparing Dimensions of the Fool, her solo exhibition at Capitain Petzel, Berlin, that autumn.

Sedrick Chisom at Castel Caramel, 2021

Sedrick Chisom’s practice moves between painting and writing. Many of his paintings take as their point of departure a dystopian science-fiction play of his own, which confronts the racial origin myths of colonialism and turns the consequences of racism back onto white bodies. His sources range from medieval images of journeys into hell and Romantic landscape painting to the Hudson River School.

Chisom studied at the Cooper Union on a full scholarship, receiving the Jacques and Natasha Gelman Foundation Award, and received his MFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in 2019.

At Castel Caramel

During his residency Chisom was in conversation with the curator and writer Aindrea Emelife, broadcast live on Castel Caramel’s Instagram.

Jill Mulleady’s paintings move between close observation of everyday life and imagined worlds. Drawing on the history of painting, on popular culture and on her own life, they create a sense of merged and multiplied time.

At Castel Caramel

She received her BFA from Concordia University, Montreal.

At Castel Caramel

Castel Caramel stands on a hill above the Côte d’Azur, near Monaco. In 1988 Ernst Fuchs moved from Vienna to Monaco and, looking for somewhere quieter to develop a new cycle of paintings, drove along the coast and into the hills of the Alpes-Maritimes with his manager, Dr Cornelia Mensdorff-Pouilly. He bought the house on first sight.

He valued its seclusion, its light and a studio with seven-metre ceilings, large enough for paintings that often took years to complete. For two decades the house was both his studio and a meeting place for artists, curators, poets, musicians and collectors.

After a period of renovation and expansion, Dr Cornelia Mensdorff-Pouilly and her daughter, Maria-Theresia Mathisen, established the residency in 2018. The grand hall, the main room of the house, serves as the resident artist’s studio and, on the evenings of dinners, as a ballroom.

Ernst Fuchs was an Austrian painter and a co-founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. His work spans painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, architecture, stage design and music, and returns throughout to religion, myth and symbolism. He revived the Old Master mixed technique, building up forms in egg tempera and glazing them with oil and resin.
